If you are a federal worker, federal contractor or sub-contractor whose compensation has been deferred during the partial federal shutdown and you reside in Elgin, South Elgin, East Dundee or West Dundee you are invited to visit one of the five (5) food pantries and soup kettles that are partners of the Elgin Cooperative Ministry. Board Chairman, Robert Langlois would like to reassure residents that fresh, nutritious food is provided seven (7) days per week. Please visit: https://elgincoopministry.com/ to find the nearest locations. Please provide proof of residence, State issued ID, Federal ID or proof of current employment and notification from the government that your pay has been suspended temporarily during the shutdown.
“We understand the added pressures on our residents due to the lengthy government shutdown at the federal level. If you need help please do not be afraid to ask. Elgin’s strong safety net of services can help you through this difficult time. If you need assistance, call 311 for guidance from city staff” says Mayor Dave Kaptain.
Shelia Jackson, Executive Director at Food For Greater Elgin commented that regardless of your political seat at the table, food is a necessity, not a luxury. We are here to offer a hand-up not a hand-out to our hungry neighbors. 80% of our clients face short term emergencies and typically use the food pantry for two (2) or three (3) months, said Jackson. Board Chairman, Mike Warren said, “we are saddened to hear about the government shutdown and how it is affecting several families in our community. There is no political statement here, this is neighbors helping neighbors during a difficult time. That’s what we do here at Food For Greater Elgin every day.”
