When one of FFGE’s board members was a young man, he was enlisted into an indoor floor hockey team at the YMCA–they were short a man. The team was made up of old guys in their forties, but he went along and became a regular. As time went by, he learned that they were some of the ‘movers and shakers’ in town, local business owners who had a reputation of ‘getting things done.’
One day, one of the players pulled him aside and asked for $50.
“What? You’re asking me for $50?” went the story.
“Yeah. We are all pitching in some money to get some toys for the kids at the club.”
He didn’t have $50, but he did have $20, and he pitched it in and went with them to buy the toys, deliver them to the children, and watch their reactions. It was awe-inspiring: their joy, their gratitude, their delight rewarded him many times over his $20. How grateful he was for having been a part of this effort!
“If you take care of your community, your community will take care of you.”
And it has!
