Putting in a Garden?

Blog Post
Happenings

If you are planting a garden this spring, Food for Greater Elgin would appreciate any surplus foods that your harvest produces in the fall.

We surveyed our guests to see what they would like to see from local gardens, and they reported back that they would like to see anything! Everything! And when pushed to be specific, here’s what they said, in no order of preference: beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage (purple),  cantaloupe, carrots, cauliflower, cherries, cucumbers, green beans, kale, lettuce, onions, peppers, plantos, serrano peppers, spinach, squash, strawberries, tomatoes, watermelon, and zucchini.

Corn also made the list, but we have an acre of sweet corn available from Kenyon Brothers Farm!

Food for Greater Elgin gratefully accepts donations of food that are:

  • Unprepared,
  • Within their “use by” date,
  • Delivered during our business hours (8-4p.m., Monday through Friday) and not during our distribution times (Tuesday, 9-11, Wednesdays 11-1 p.m., Fridays 11:30-1 p.m.)

Happy planting!
