In Illinois, the coming of August means that sweet corn is ready to be picked. At Food for Greater Elgin,
this is an opportunity for us to join with partner farmers and pick sweet corn to provide for our
neighbors, but we need your help to make it happen: Join us in picking corn!
Here’s how it works: any day now we will get a call from Mike Kenyon of Kenyon Brothers Farm that the sweet corn is ready. We will put out the call for volunteers and meet at his farm at 7:30 a.m. and pick corn for about an hour. Wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt, a hat and some gloves. We pick early in the morning because it is so much cooler then than later in the day. With a good group, after about an hour we will have stuffed our van and be done for the day.
Interested? Call Veronica Noland at 224-242-3371 to reserve your spot!
This is a great opportunity for high school and college students (or any able-bodied volunteer) to serve our neighbors while crossing an item off of your bucket list (how can you say that you are from Illinois if you’ve never picked corn?).
See you at Kenyon Farm!
