Be Like Saint Nick

Gifts That Keep Giving

We are big on Santa Claus. He’s got movies, TV specials, books and a seemingly endless array of elves preparing toys for the children of the world (and a few grown-ups). But did you know that the
legend of Santa Claus emerged out of stories about a real person?

Saint Nicholas was an early Christian bishop in what was then called Myra in Asia Minor. Amongst his pious habits was secret gift-giving to families in need. The story of how he saved a family from destitution by tossing a bag of gold coins down the chimney struck a chord with the 4th Century Christian community, and the legend began.

Giving to those in need is a common theme in most religions; a philosopher might observe that doing
good to others is a value that is intrinsic to the human condition. And of course, a Christian theologian
would say that giving to others is part of loving God and reflects God’s gift to us in Jesus.

Whatever your personal beliefs, we can all agree on one thing: We need more Santas in the world! We could all stand to be a bit more like Saint Nick, giving back a portion of what we’ve been given.

Along with your other Christmas gifts this year, please give a gift to Food for Greater Elgin so that we can provide food for our neighbors who are in need. Thank you, and Ho! Ho! Ho!
