A crowd of 40 plus people gathered to officially open the new parking lot at Food for Greater Elgin on Saturday, October 9, 2021.
Highlights included:
- Recognition of donors that made the work possible: John B. Sanfilippo and Son, Ozinga Family Foundation, Components Management Group and Brittain’s Car Wash. These generous donors provided about half of the costs for the creation of the parking lot.
- Recognition of the contractors, led by Josh Campanelli of Shales McNutt Construction Services, who served as general contractor for the project. Other firms involved included Hampton Lenzini and Renwick, Inc., Rubino Engineering, Stark and Son Trenching, Brasco Paving, Landmark Contractors, Inc. Ozinga Concrete, Kellenberer Electric, Maintenance Coatings, and Green Guerilla.
- Remarks by Elgin Mayor David Kaptain on the need for food and food access in Elgin.
- Remarks by Julie Yurko, Chief Executive Officer of Northern Illinois Food Bank, who presented a $95,000 award to FFGE.
- Remarks by Carol Gierske and Mike Warren of the Elgin Chamber of Commerce.
- And the ribbon cutting to officially open the lot!
Thanks to all who contributed and came to celebrate this important event. While the parking lot is a gift of concrete, asphalt and other construction services, it is foremost a gift of dignity, compassion and safety to our guests!
