One of the historic funders of Food For Greater Elgin has been Church World Service’s annual CROP Hunger Walk, where walkers raise money by collecting sponsors.
A quarter of the money raised in Elgin stays in Elgin to support local food pantries, soup kettles, and Food For Greater Elgin. FFGE receives anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 from this community effort. This year, the walk is ‘virtual’: walkers can choose their own route, date, and companions (if any), but can still raise much-needed funds.
Interim Executive Director Michael Montgomery explains, “While we focus on the local alleviation of hunger in our communities, we must never forget that hunger is a global problem that requires global action. We should never forget both sides of the equation, to ‘think globally and act locally,’ and CROP Walks help us to do that.
FFGE participates in the walk, organizing its own team, and urging people to sponsor their church or synagogue’s team or make a donation.
